Exploration of Mineral Resources and Sustainable Development in the Amazon

Brazil is one of the world’s richest countries when it comes to mineral resources. Mineral extraction employs hundreds of thousands of people and provides the mining companies and the Brazilian government with billions of dollars in income and taxes every year. At the same time, the social and environmental challenges are huge, and the paradox remains: the municipalities that host mining activities and suffer most of the environmental and social problems in the Amazon are still among the poorest in Brazil. This international seminar gathers representatives from academia, the private sector, government and civil society to share experiences, research results and to discuss the challenges we face when balancing the exploration of mineral resources and sustainable socio-economic development.
